APOLLON AND DAPHNE MYTHS
Apollon was a very good archer and he loved
to praise himself. One day he came across Eros , the son of Aphrodit and made
fun of his archery and said to him, "You cannot be as a good archer as I am. You should leave war-like weapons
to gods like me".
Eros got very angry and said to him "Your arrows may strike all things, Apollo, but mine shall strike you." He decided to take revenge of these words. He took two arrows, one of
gold and one of lead. The golden one was to make people fall in love and the
other was to make people hate. Eros shot Apollon with the golden one and
Daphne, the daughter of Peneus with the lead one.
And Apollo fell in love with Daphne and loved
noone else as he loved her. But Daphne had the lead arrow so she never loved
someone or wanted to marry. Her father often said to her, ‘Daughter you owe me a son.’ but she begged her father to respect her decision and remain unmarried. She was so beautiful that her father warned her saying
’ Your face will not allow it.’’
Apollo was in love with Daphne and one day
he saw her in the woods and wanted to talk with her. But when Daphne saw him,
she started to run. Apollo was behind chasing her. When she understood that he
would catch her, she called her father and wanted help.
She said ’Peneus open the earth to hide me or change my form.’ Then she started to turn into a laurel tree. Her body was covered with
bark, she rooted into the ground and her hair turned into the leaves.
Apollo was just watching how her ladylove was turning into a tree. He was
upset.
He promised that he would never forget
Daphne and he made the laurel his sacred tree. He said
that he would wear a crown of laurel on
his head and swore to the laurel tree that it would always stay green and never rot. Then the
laurel tree bowed its head in gratitude.
